Turn a Strava activity into a trip film

A ride, a run or a hike you recorded on Strava can become a short film of its route on a real map, travelled by a bike, a runner or a hiker and saved as an MP4. It starts with the GPX that Strava’s website exports from any activity of your own.

Updated

Export the track

  1. Sign in at strava.com on a computer and open the activity. The phone app does not export files, so use the website.
  2. Open the activity’s menu, the button with three dots beside it.
  3. Choose Export GPX. The file downloads straight away.

Menus move. If yours looks different, look for Export GPX or Download GPX.

Strava gives a GPX, which is the file to use. The same menu’s Export Original gives back the file as it was uploaded: a TCX works here, a FIT does not, so take the GPX when the original is a FIT.

Make the film

Drop the GPX that Strava exported on the GPX viewer, and check its distance and climbing against the activity’s page; Strava counts climbing its own way, so a small gap is normal. Press Animate this route, and the ride, run or hike opens in the editor as a trip, its vehicle chosen from the activity’s speed. The steps from there are the same for every app: From the track to the film.

Drop the file on the viewer, check it, and press Animate this route. No account, and nothing to install.

Questions

What about a Strava route rather than an activity?

Routes export GPX too, from the route’s own page. A route has no times, so Voyarc cannot tell its speed and starts it as a hiker: open the scene in the story and pick the bicycle or the car.

Whether the file is uploaded, how several files make one film and how to hide a private start are answered once for every app: questions every app shares.
