Close to 16,000 passengers flew the route last season
Cathay Pacific will not resume its seasonal Cairns to Hong Kong service for the 2026-27 summer. The route ran three times a week over the December to February peak on an Airbus A330, and had been flying again since 2024. Cathay calls it a commercial decision rather than a demand problem, and has not ruled out bringing it back. Cairns passengers now connect through Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth or Adelaide.
Cathay Pacific schedules a 428-seat Boeing 777-300 on its Saturday Hong Kong to Guangzhou flight from 25 October 2026. The CX982/983 pairing skips 7 and 14 November. The move is part of a wider expansion of 777-300 flying on mainland China routes for the northern winter, which also puts the type on Chengdu services on selected dates.
