How to make an animated travel map video

Type the places you went, pick how you travelled each leg, and press Make the film. Voyarc plays the trip on a real map and saves it to your device as an MP4, in a landscape 16:9, vertical 9:16 or square 1:1 frame.

Three ways in

  • Type the stops

On the home page, type the trip the way you would say it, “Lisbon to Seville, Granada”, and press Enter, or add the places one at a time. Each leg is drawn on real roads, rails and water.

  • Import a track

Drop a GPX, TCX, KML, KMZ or GeoJSON file on the home page and it plays as a leg of its own, every bend as you recorded it, its points kept on your device. GPX to video has the detail.

  • Open a saved trip

A trip’s link opens it as you left it, and the home page offers the last trip this browser keeps. Or open one of the sample trips and make it yours, a stop or a vehicle at a time.

Pick how you travelled

Every leg has its own mode and vehicle: drive, ride, walk, rail, ferry or fly, from a convertible or a motorhome to a bike, a steam train or a seaplane. Open a leg in the story beside the map to change it, or to play it by night, when the map darkens and the lights come on.

Choose the frame

  • 16:9, landscape

For YouTube, a television or a laptop screen.

  • 9:16, vertical

For Reels, TikTok and Shorts, every shot framed for the tall screen: the guide for Instagram and TikTok says how.

  • 1:1, square

For a post in the feed.

Free, a Film pass or Pro

The free film has every trip, every frame and the vehicle sounds, at 1080p with a small Voyarc chip, up to a minute long. A Film pass, US$5.99 once for 48 hours, or Pro, US$39 a year, takes the chip off, exports up to 4K, adds your logo and makes the film as long as your trip needs. Pricing has the rest.

How long a film is

As long as the trip needs. We pace the film from the trip itself, its legs, its stops and the photos you add, so a weekend away runs shorter than a month across a continent. The Film length chip under the trip’s name can make it Short.

See one

Highway One, top down from the Golden Gate to the Pacific pier: the free 16:9 film, as the export room makes it. Open the trip.

Type your first stop, or drop a track file on the home page. No account, and nothing to install.

Questions

Do I need an account?

No. There is no account and no password: you type a trip or drop a track, and the film is made in your browser and saved to your device. A pass or Pro lives in the browser you paid in, and the email you paid with restores it on another device.

Can one film mix a drive, a train and a ferry?

Yes. Each leg keeps its own mode and vehicle, so a trip can drive to the coast, cross on the ferry and finish by train, and a recorded track can sit between typed legs.

Can I make the film on a phone?

Yes. The free film is made on a phone as on a computer. Long films and 4K take minutes on a phone and may not finish on an older one, and a trip started on the phone can be picked up on a computer.

What leaves my browser?

The film is made on your device. To find the roads, a road leg’s two ends go to a routing service, and a place the built-in list does not know goes to a place search; an imported track’s points are never sent. The privacy page has the detail.
