Turn a Garmin Connect activity into a trip film

The walk, ride or drive your Garmin watch or bike computer recorded is already a route with a clock, which is all a trip film needs. Garmin Connect’s website exports it as a GPX or a TCX, and either one plays here.

Updated

Export the track

  1. Sign in at connect.garmin.com on a computer and open the activity from your list of activities.
  2. Open the activity’s menu, near the top right of its page.
  3. Choose Export to GPX, or Export to TCX. The file downloads.

Menus move. If yours looks different, look for Export GPX or Download GPX.

Garmin Connect gives a GPX or a TCX, and Voyarc reads both. Export Original gives the watch’s own FIT file, zipped, which is not read here: take the GPX instead.

Make the film

Drop the GPX or TCX that Garmin Connect exported on the GPX viewer, and check its distance and climbing against the activity’s summary. Press Animate this route, and the walk, ride or drive opens in the editor as a trip, its vehicle chosen from the speed your watch or bike computer recorded. The steps from there are the same for every app: From the track to the film.

Drop the file on the viewer, check it, and press Animate this route. No account, and nothing to install.

Questions

Should I export GPX or TCX?

Either. Both carry the positions, the heights and the times, which is what the film uses; the TCX’s heart rate and cadence are not read. The TCX viewer opens a TCX the way the GPX viewer opens a GPX.

Whether the file is uploaded, how several files make one film and how to hide a private start are answered once for every app: questions every app shares.
